LOCAL HAZARDS

"HOT PONDS"
(Decomissioning in Progress)

The "hot ponds" is the nickname given to the hot water discharge from the Consumers Energy power plant. The plant draws water from the Saginaw River and uses it for cooling, the warm waste water is discharged into the Bay, creating pockets of open water/thin ice. Snowmobilers and Fisherman are lulled into a false sense of security by staying close to shore, only to fall into the frigid holes.

RIVERS, STREAMS & VEGETATION

Rivers, streams and any moving water can erode ice from underneath. Water flowing in from land is warmer and may be laden with road salt, be extra vigilant around any rivers, streams, sand bars and ditches that flow into the Bay.
